Then We Came to the Endby Joshua Ferris |
Gail Reid (01/05/12): Then We Came to the End is the humorous account of a group of longtime co-workers and the shenanigans that goes on in an office setting. They work for an advertising agency; and over a recent period of time in which the volume of work declines, the agency is going through layoffs. Humor is often the antidote to stress and the characters, with their quirky personalities, have bonded together.
Everything is not funny, however. One of the staff loses a child to murder; another returns after being terminated to terrorize the office; and the agency director, who intimidates all her staff, denies obvious illness and has jeopardized her health.
If you have ever worked in an office setting, some of the characters will leap from the page and you will
recognize them. As to the humor, like many situations, it is always funnier to be there than to read about it.
