The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detectiveby Kate Summerscale |
Carol Donsky Newell:
I just finished The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher and
it's one of the best books I've read this year.
Kate Summerscale is a good writer and a thorough researcher.
Although this is a non-fiction book, the story unfolds
like a work of fiction. You will love some of the social
history --- how things came to be named and how people lived
in the mid-nineteenth century. The lead detective is not only
a fascinating character, but the first real detective and it
is he that prompted the first detective stories by Poe, Dickins,
Collilns and Doyle. The actual case lead to many fictionalized versions too.
