The Stormchasersby Jenna Blum |
Judy Stanton: read and enjoyed Those Who Save Us, so I was
intrigued to learn that Jenna Blum published a second novel. Set in 1988 and 2008 in
the midwest, the Stormchasers is a story of Karena Jorge and twin brother Charles, who
is bipolar and manic depressive. His personality is mirrored in his obesession in chasing
storms -- unpredictable, sometimes violent, and scary -- with a ray of sunshine and
breezes --peaceful and calm, waiting on the other side. The story is as wild and fast
moving as chasing a storm, well written with interesting characters, some more well developed
than others. At first blush, it appears to be light years away from Those Who Save Us,
but both books tackle some similar issues: family relationships (in this it's "sistah"- brother/twins
not mother/daughter); human strength and weakness dealing with horrific choices; and
the impact of holding secrets inside you. Both books make you think about how you
might react in similar circumstances. A good, quick read, recommended.
