Dale Israel: "The Last Jew" by Noah Gordon may not be quite
as good his other book called "The Physician," but it's still a really good read. The story
takes place in Spain during the late 1400's. The Spanish Inquisition is in full swing, and the
Jews who have been a large part of Spanish life, are expelled from the country...all except Yonah
Toledano, the 15 year old son of a celebrated Spanish silversmith. Trapped in Spain by unusual
circumstances, Yonah is determined to maintain his Jewish identity. I'm a sucker for historical fiction
and sagas that follow a character throughout his lifetime and this one did not disappoint. The fact
that my husband is of Sephardic ancestry made the book all the more interesting. I really enjoyed
the book and I'm glad I read it.
