The Cellist of Sarajevoby Steven Galloway |
Gail Reid: A cellist plays a haunting piece for 22 days in war-torn Sarajevo to commemorate the deaths of 22 people killed in a bread line. Three other characters are portrayed during the siege of the early nineties. Arrow, a young woman sniper stripped of her former identity; Kenan, a father risking his life to carry water across the city and Dragan, a lonely baker who has shipped his wife and son off to Italy.
This is a slim book, very sparsely written. But the author
digs deep in to the characters to show fear, bravery, patriotism,
and friendship in the context of war and its destruction.
