Arlene Almas: Investigator Jackson Brodie appears again
in this new novel by Kate Atkinson, along with some other familiar faces from her previous books.
Atkinson weaves the narrative skillfully among all the characters until we are able to make out the
connections that link them all. There is a lot of humor, as well as unpleasant realism, in this tale of
a woman learning to care for a child and a man learning to care for a dog - both achieve great personal
satisfaction in the process, and find that a great empty space in their lives has been filled. The action
moves along briskly, and in a typically British manner the characters speak their minds frankly. I found
this a delight to read.
