Midwivesby Chris Bohjalian |
Dale Israel: This is one of Bohjalian's older books but I was interested in reading it because as a nurse, I used to work in Labor and Delivery. I was curious about the book because coming from a scientific background (I wholly embrace the philosophy that babies should be born in a hospital setting where immediate medical care is available) I wanted to get another point of view regarding home births. This was a great book. It is narrated by a midwife's daughter and relates the story of a tragedy and its aftermath. It tells how the midwife (Sibyl Danforth) has no alternative except to save the baby of a woman in her care who she fears has died of a stroke during a long and difficult labor. I think it was a great summer read and would highly recommend it.
