Man in the Darkby Paul Auster |
Arlene Almas:
A short (180 pages), quirky novel, this is a story within a story - our protagonist,
a book critic named August Brill, is imagining a narrative in which a magician
named Owen Brick finds himself in a parallel world in which the United States
is fighting a contemporary version of a civil war. The portions of the book
involving August, his daughter, and his granddaughter let the reader share
the family's experiences very movingly; the alternative history
experienced by Brick and the people he meets in our country at war
with itself is actually quite realistic. If you're up for something unusual,
you may enjoy this imaginative book.
