Judy Stanton: After reading Little Bee, I was
motivated to check out Chris Cleave's debut novel, Incendiary. Set in London,
the book centers on a distraught woman whose husband and 4-year-old son were among
the hundreds killed when suicide bombers attacked a stadium during a soccer match.
The writing is Faulknereske....sentences ramble on...as does the bizarre story of
panic, fear, betrayal, and strange relationships. To me, the writing mirrors the
lead character, whose life has fallen apart with such a horrific loss. The story is formatted
as a letter to Osama, who she's trying to make understand her sadness and rage.
