In the Heart of the Canyonby Elizabeth Hyde |
Arlene Almas: What an adventure this book is! It has everything:
a white-water rafting trip on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, multiple fascinating
characters (three guides and twelve passengers, or "guests"), and the inevitable friction of
different personalities bumping up against each other. On the other hand, surprising and
gratifying connections develop between some of the guests. The author keeps the action moving,
while at the same time taking us deep into the thoughts and feelings of the guides and guests.
Hyde is able to delve believably into the innermost being of a twelve-year-old boy and a
seventy-three-year-old woman; she brings each character fully to life. Adventures and
misadventures occur throughout, but the biggest surprise comes at the end and will not
let you stop reading until you reach the outcome. Enjoy your river running!
