Girl in Translationby Jean Kwok |
Dale Israel: Girl in Translation (not to be confused
with the movie Lost in Translation) is a coming of age, immigrant story. Kimberly Chang
is only 11 years old when she leaves Hong Kong with her widowed mother to find a better
life in NYC. Unfortunately, America isn't all it's cracked up to be. Kimberly and her
mother live in absolute squalor and must do backbreaking work in a sweatshop just to survive. This debut novel is not a memoir although reading about the author's life on her website
www.jeankwok.com demonstrates that there are a lot of similarities. This was an easy and quick read that gave me insight into what it's like to leave one's home and move to a place where the language and customs are different. I enjoyed this book and I'm glad I read it.
