Beautiful Childrenby Charles Bock |
Arlene Almas: "Beautiful Children" is a difficult read - not because the writing is bad, but because the subject matter is so heart-wrenching. It's a novel about runaway teens, street kids, and parents in and around Las Vegas, and the stories of these people's lives are not easy to hear. The details come across as realistic and true, and the (many) main characters become fleshed out and completely three-dimensional. I could not put this book down until the end, when the central mystery was ambiguously resolved. The author includes a list of resources for runaway kids and their parents to call. I recommend this book for a well-written, graphically precise look at a very serious problem. Rating: ****
