Barney's Versionby Mordecai Richler |
Arlene Almas: Barney Panovsky, a producer of
schlock TV shows, lives in Montreal and has numerous friends and enemies in
the Jewish community there, including some who spent time in Paris along with
him in the early 1950's. His third wife, the love of his life, has left him, and he
is suspected of having murdered one of his old frenemies (friend/enemy). Throughout the story,
the author gives us wildly funny satiric commentary on every social and political issue
out there (pretentious artists, Canadian Jewish princesses, Quebec separatists, marriage
and divorce, friendship and enmity). The characters may be a little over the top, but
I got a lot of laughter and enjoyment out of this book.
